Meet Dr. Richard Bates
Dentistry has been a wonderful profession for the past 38 years. It has been so rewarding to help people take care of their dental needs. My team and I have made such a huge difference in our patients’ lives by taking care of their pain, helping them chew or speak better, and increasing their self-esteem by improving their smiles.
I have been blessed to work with so many wonderful patients and an excellent staff; they are what make my job truly enjoyable.
Education and Continuing Education
I obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology from the Virginia Military Institute. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies, I served part-time with the U.S. Army Reserve. I attended The Ohio State University for dental school, and upon graduation, moved to Colonial Heights, where I purchased a dental practice.
In addition to being an adjunct professor for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, I continue my own education in implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and sleep apnea. Dentistry is changing rapidly, and I want to provide for my patients the very best possible care.
I participate in the Nottoway Study Club with other general dentists and specialists, during which we share ideas and discuss pertinent topics to dentistry. My patients deserve the very best treatment I can provide and these courses enable me to perform it.
Professional Affiliations
I am a member in the Virginia Dental Association and the American Dental Association. As a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, I have gained knowledge about many facets of general dentistry. I was honored to be inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy as well as the International College of Dentists for my achievements in dentistry.
Family and Community
I grew up in Harrison, Ohio, which is near Cincinnati. My father was a veterinarian and I think he first got me interested in healthcare.
I live in Chester with my wife Sue. She is a registered nurse by profession and also worked as a reading specialist. Sue is retired now and has her mother living in the area to check on. I have two sons: Will, who is married to Allison and lives in Atlanta, and Jack, who lives in Denver.
When I am not working, I can be found outdoors, with golfing and fishing being my biggest loves, or cheering on VCU men’s basketball. Sue and I also love to travel and see new places.
I was on the board of directors for the Chester YMCA, where I am supporting the new renovation planned for the building. Our office is involved with the Give Kids a Smile and Donated Dental programs of the American Dental Association.
These programs enable my office to provide services for people in need at no cost to them. I also have the privilege of volunteering at the VCU School of Dentistry’s Lucy Corr Dental Clinic with senior dental students to provide treatment for the residents there.
